I started playing the Oboe the summer after my 9th grade year. My Junior High Band Teacher, Robert Wood, suggested that I learn it because people that could play it got better scholarships. The Oboe is the hardest woodwind instrument there is due to the high amount of air pressure required to play it. It has been a challenge, but it has greatly increased my lung capacity. It's a beautiful instrument and I wouldn't give it up now for anything! I play on a very nice student model made by Armstrong. It's made out of plastic that's designed to look like wood. It was given to me as a present from my Parents. I played on an English Horn for the first time for the Bluffdale Arts Council's production of Oklahoma (as you can see from the picture on the right), but I do not own one. The English Horn I borrowed belongs to Christie (the Orchestra Director for the Bluffdale Arts Council) and is about 70 years old. It was the one played on the soundtrack for the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
